The Castello Scaligero, in Sirmione, near Lake Garda, takes its name from the Veronese emperors in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. Goethe was jailed in 1786 for sketching the castle in a way that raised suspicions!

Located on a tiny volcanic island connected to Ischia by a 720-foot bridge, it was built in the 5th century B.C. To protect it from pirates, Alfonso of Aragon fortified it in the 15th century.
In addition to being a castle, it is also a town, much as it would have been a millennium ago when the hamlet was enclosed by castle walls to keep off attackers.

The area surrounding Trento is home to Belfort Castle, the most picturesque. The massive stronghold was constructed in the 14th century, Today, only the ruins remain.
